Thesis-completion track
This program is intended for holders of a non-thesis master’s degree, for conducting thesis work.
Program duration – two years. The departments may request from the School of Graduate Studies to extend or shorten that period.
Policy for thesis work in this program is the same as for students in the thesis-based master’s degree program, including submission of research proposal, proposal review, thesis review and oral exam.
The department is authorized to require coursework, including special courses for thesis-based master’s degree students. The course load may not, in most cases, exceed one third of the total course load for thesis-based master’s degree students in the department.
Students in this track have no Jewish studies or English requirements.
Admission to the PhD program is conditional on obtaining a minimum grade of 85 (or higher, if the department so requires) and completion of courses as determined at the time of admission. Students whose master’s degree grade point average was below 85 will be required to obtain a minimum average of 85 in their coursework; if they have no coursework requirements, or have been required only 1 AC, they must obtain a minimum grade of 90 on their thesis. Upon completion of supplementary coursework, and after verifying that all requirements of the track have been fulfilled, the departmental committee may recommend to the School of Graduate Studies to admit the student to the PhD program.
Admission criteria
Non-thesis master’s degree with a minimum grade point average of 80 and a minimum average of 85 in seminar courses.
Admission is at the discretion of the department and the School of Graduate Studies. Considerations include when the master’s degree was awarded and the field of study in the bachelor's and master’s degrees. In general, only applicants who plan to do their thesis work in an area close to their master’s degree discipline will be admitted, but exceptions will be made where appropriate, for example when the applicant’s area of research interest is in a discipline studied at the undergraduate level, or when the thesis area they wish to explore is multi-disciplinary.
Certificate:
Students whose thesis is approved shall receive a certificate confirming their thesis work and indicating the grade obtained.
The track does not award a master’s degree diploma.
